name: Alison Hellesvig
media: Cut Paper

“Kaleidosculpture”

A native of Eugene, Oregon, Alison Hellesvig moved to Vancouver, Washington, in January of 2008. Soon afterward she began creating original two-dimensional cut paper abstract designs, inspired by her dreams or specific images. Recently, images she experienced in nature have also inspired her work. She cuts strips of various shapes and sizes to weave into the foreground; these pieces are not glued, just woven. Once the strips are in place, Alison cuts away shapes in foreground then adds background layers of various colors. The layers add depth as well as visually appealing color that contribute to the overall design.

Each piece of art Alison creates is a unique work that can never be duplicated. The strips, foreground and backgrounds are hand-cut with an X-acto™ blade (#11). Alison cannot always predict the finished product, as certain designs and color combinations occur to her as the work unfolds. Naming these pieces is the final step, and each name is inspired by the whole piece as the artist experiences it; yet, individuals will perceive each work uniquely, and may see images unrelated to its given title. This provokes conversation and deeper appreciation. (more)

Alison Hellesvig became an artist in childhood, using whatever medium she could access. Her mother says that when she was in pre-school she would bring her art projects home, put them on the piano, then play and sing the music that went along with her unique creations.

Among the many mediums she has used, pen and ink and color pencils have been Alison’s favorites for most of her life. She generally creates abstract designs with them. She also created a coloring book of abstract designs about six years ago using the Paint computer program. In her youth, Alison sculpted clay to make mugs with cartoon-like faces.

Alison earned her Associate of Arts transfer degree at Lane Community College in Eugene, OR and her Bachelors degree (Liberal Arts) at Oregon State University in 2000.
